Health warnings have been lifted at several bays after water quality testing showed contamination levels had returned to safe limits.

Health New Zealand said warnings were removed at Corsair Bay, Cass Bay at the jetty, Cass Bay at the beach, and Rapaki Bay at the beach.

The warnings were issued on Saturday 10 January after authorities advised there had been a discharge of untreated sewage into Corsair Bay.

Latest water testing results showed faecal bacteria levels at all affected sites were now below guideline values, making the water suitable for recreational use.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton said the update would be welcomed by swimmers and others who had been avoiding the water.

“This is great news for swimmers and other recreational water users who would have been avoiding the water following the high levels of contamination,” she said.

Health New Zealand said when a health warning is in place, water quality is not considered safe for recreational activities such as swimming due to potential health risks.

Water contaminated by human or animal faecal matter can contain disease causing micro organisms including viruses, bacteria, and protozoa.
