Environment Canterbury has publicly notified an application to build a large Dry Anaerobic Digestion plant in Yaldhurst.

NALG (NZ) Ltd has applied for resource consents to build a facility in Yaldhurst, Christchurch, that converts organic material into methane gas.

The plant will use dry anaerobic digestion to process waste without oxygen. The process will produce methane for generating electricity and heat, along with carbon dioxide and matured compost.

The facility will feature buildings totalling 16,000 square meters for processing, staff facilities, and a workshop.

This aims to support sustainable energy and waste management in the region.

The site, adjacent to Miners Road, also involves the address at 223 Old West Coast Road.

If the consent was approved, the facility would be allowed to operate for the next 35 years.

External structures include a combined heat and power plant, biogas storage, digesters, biofilters, and rainwater tanks.

Access will be via Miners Road with a new sealed service road, staff parking, and stormwater systems.

The applications have been publicly notified and are open for submissions until 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025. Residents can make a submission here.
