#REVIEW: Showbiz Christchurch’s production of ‘That Bloody Woman’ is an exhilarating rock musical that delivers an electrifying performance, boasting an exceptional cast, a witty script, and entertaining musical numbers.
Bryony Jamison, in her portrayal of Kate Sheppard, effortlessly commands the stage with authority, allowing the ensemble to take charge of the more ‘adult’ musical numbers.
Tom Hart brilliantly performs the rather unlikable autocratic Richard ‘king dick’ Seddon.
Bringing a dynamic presence to the role of Kate’s husband, Chris Goodyear ignites the stage with his enthusiastic performance of Walter Sheppard.
Cameron Melville portrays Kate’s true love, William Lovell-Smith. At one point, Walter and William engage in a vocal showdown, each determined to outshine the other.
It brought to mind the playful spirit of The Muppet Show, where exuberant skits often showcased such delightful antics.
The infusion of Kiwi humour and the “normal” New Zealand accents add an extra layer of pleasure to the entire experience.
The simple yet highly effective on-stage lighting set allows the performers to shine.
Prepare yourself for a show that goes far beyond a mere replica of The Court Theatre’s 2016 production, as it boldly establishes its own unique identity.
Unlike its predecessor, which featured a cast of six, Showbiz Christchurch takes the stage with an astounding 17 exceptional performers.
The show’s impeccable pace captivates the audience, leaving us no choice but to rise to our feet in a well-earned standing ovation!
With an all-star female creative team at the helm, including Mel Luckman as Director, “That Bloody Woman” unfolds as a riveting rock concert where Kate and her rebellious gang recount her incredible story.
Luckman was spot on when she told me earlier in the week, audiences will come away feeling proud to be a New Zealander.
