The New Zealand Defence Force has confirmed the person critically injured in an assault at Burnham Military Camp is a New Zealand Army soldier.
The soldier is fighting for his life after an assault at the Canterbury military facility early on Saturday morning.
As first reported by chrislynchmedia.com the incident occurred at the Burnham Junior Ranks Club within Burnham Military Camp.
Detective Inspector Craig Farrant, Canterbury District Field Crime Manager, told chrislynchmedia.com two people were before the courts following the assault.
“Police received the report of the alleged assault at around 12.30am on Saturday.
“The victim has sustained critical injuries.
“Two men, aged 25 and 27, have been charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday 22 June.
“Police are not seeking anybody else in relation to this incident.
“Canterbury Police are working closely with the New Zealand Defence Force on this incident, and as the matter is before the courts Police are unable to comment further,” Farrant said.
A New Zealand Defence Force spokeswoman confirmed “an incident occurred at Burnham Military Camp on Friday night that resulted in serious injuries sustained by a New Zealand Army soldier.”
“Two individuals have been charged. As the matter is before the courts, we have no further comment to provide.”
