Police have confirmed to chrislynchmedia.com a video circulating online showing dangerous driving in Cashmere relates to an incident in 2022 and had already been investigated at the time.

Chris Lynch Media withheld the video until police confirmed the facts, unlike other outlets that published it without any context.

Another media outlet wrongly reported the incident happened in the weekend.

Inspector Paul Reeves, Canterbury Metro Area Response Manager, said police had received reports in recent days about videos uploaded to an Instagram page.

He said one of the videos showed appalling driving behaviour around Cashmere in the early hours of 15 December 2022.

Police were contacted after the vehicle crashed on Hackthorne Road and was abandoned.

Reeves said the vehicle had been reported stolen overnight from outside a Hoon Hay address.

“At the time it was reported the driver fled on foot on Hackthorne Road just before 2am,” he said.

“The Nissan Tiida was recovered and subjected to a forensic examination in the days that followed. Unfortunately there were no further lines of enquiry to identify who was driving or who stole the vehicle, and the matter was filed in late 2022.”

Reeves said it was fortunate the dangerous driving did not result in anyone being injured.

He said a two month police operation launched in December 2025 across Christchurch remained ongoing and was targeting this type of youth offending.

“The team are having good success at holding offenders to account, and we have seen a reduction in this type of offending,” Reeves said.
