Chinese travellers will soon find it easier and cheaper to transit through New Zealand airports, after the Government announced a major change to visa rules.

From November, Chinese passport holders will no longer need a Transit Visa to pass through New Zealand. Instead, they will be able to apply for a New Zealand electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), which is cheaper, faster, and valid for multiple trips.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said the change would make New Zealand a more attractive transit point for international travellers.

“Instead of spending $235 and waiting four days, individuals can pay as little as $17 and be processed in 24 hours,” she said.

The NZeTA will be valid for two years, allowing people to transit through New Zealand more than once without needing to reapply.

The move is expected to boost international passenger numbers, especially with a new flight route opening from China to South America via Auckland.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said the change would help turn Auckland Airport into a key international hub and make New Zealand more appealing to both travellers and airlines.

“Every additional passenger transiting through New Zealand helps lower ticket prices, making it cheaper for other tourists to visit,” she said.

The Government said the decision is part of a broader plan to support economic growth by improving tourism, trade, and air connectivity.
