Police are investigating the assault of a woman in central Christchurch last night.

A police spokeswoman said officers responded to reports of an assault in Cathedral Square just before 9pm Sunday.

The woman was transported to hospital with moderate injuries.

Police are enquiring into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

No arrests have been made.
