Police are investigating a string of early morning burglaries across Christchurch after six businesses were targeted within just 90 minutes.

The businesses included liquor stores and a pharmacy, with police believing the incidents may be linked.

Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said police were working to identify and locate those responsible.

“We are following every line of enquiry available to us to locate the people we believe are responsible,” McDaniel said.

“Part of those enquiries are establishing what has been taken, but the value of what has been stolen will not come close to the damage that’s been caused to hard-working businesses.”

Police said two stolen vehicles were involved in the first three break ins, which took place on Ensign Street about 5.40am.

One of the vehicles was later abandoned after being used to gain entry to a liquor store in Wigram a short time later.

About 6.40am, a suspect vehicle was spotted on QEII Drive following another burglary on Hawke Street.

“A suspect vehicle was spotted on QEII Drive following another burglary on Hawke Street about 6.40am, but due to the dangerous driving behaviour it was not pursued,” McDaniel said.

The vehicle was found abandoned on Dunbarton Street in Redwood about 7.10am, near where another vehicle was stolen.

McDaniel said police wanted to reassure the community that the investigation was being treated seriously.

“We want to assure the community that every lead is being followed to locate the offenders and prevent them from causing further harm.”

Police want to hear from anyone with dashcam footage, video of the incidents, or information that could assist the investigation.

Information can be provided online through the 105 Police website by selecting “Update report”, or by calling 105 and quoting reference number P066899255.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
