New Zealand pet owners are being urged to dust off the camera roll, with the SPCA’s Pets of the Year competition officially open and on the hunt for the cats and dogs that will star in its 2027 calendars.
Entries are now open for both a cat edition and a dog edition, with the SPCA inviting Kiwis to share photos that capture the personality of their pet, whether that’s a kitten asleep mid zoomie, a big tough dog who refuses to go anywhere without his favourite soft toy, or a cat just discovering the joys of wet food.
The SPCA says every entry helps it continue its work caring for vulnerable animals around the country.

“Every single photo of our beloved fur babies brings us joy, great memories, and a reminder of how special our relationships with our cherished animals are,” organisers said. “Now’s your chance to share those photos with the world, well, New Zealand, anyway.”
Entering is straightforward. Owners are asked to head to the Pets of the Year website, upload a favourite photo that shows off their pet’s unique personality, create a profile explaining what makes their pet special, then share that profile with friends and whānau who can make a donation on the page. The profile that raises the most money wins the title of SPCA Pet of the Year.
Every profile that raises $150 or more is guaranteed a spot in either the cat or dog calendar, making it possible for plenty of pets to feature even if they don’t take the top prize.
Entries close on Monday 29 June.
The SPCA says funds raised through the competition go directly toward providing medical care, shelter and a second chance for animals in need across New Zealand.
“Whether they’re a serial sock thief, a puddle jumping champion, or the king of cat naps, we want to hear it all,” organisers said. “Funny, heartwarming, or downright adorable, your pet’s story is part of what makes this campaign so pawsome.”
