Motorists are being urged to take extra care on several state highways in Otago and Southland this morning, with snow and ice affecting roads across parts of the lower South Island.
New Zealand Transport Agency has issued multiple area warnings, with contractors out inspecting affected highways and laying grit where needed.
NZTA said road users should drive to the conditions, particularly on routes at higher elevations where snow and ice may make travel more hazardous.
Warnings are in place for State Highway 6 between Wānaka and Haast, State Highway 8 between Omarama and Tarras through the Lindis Pass, and State Highway 6 between Cromwell and Gibbston through the Kawarau Gorge.
Other affected routes include State Highway 85 between Ranfurly and Omakau, State Highway 94 at Centre Hill between the Mavora Lakes Road and Centre Hill Road intersections, and State Highway 6 at Parawa between the Bixter Road and Parawa Station Road intersections.
MetService forecasts suggest snowfalls across the central South Island today could be disruptive to travel.
Drivers are advised to check the latest road conditions before heading off, including updates on NZTA’s Journey Planner website.
