SH1 Rakaia Bridge is open again after an earlier “police incident”.

The NZ Transport Agency earlier said the state highway was closed in both directions “following a police incident this afternoon”.

This resulted in significant queuing on both sides of the river. Road users were asked to delay their travel or use an alternative route.

“People are asked to travel with care as congestion in the area eases,” is the latest advice from the NZTA.

A St John spokesperson said one ambulance and one operations manager were responding to the scene and they will update further “as more information becomes available”.

NZ Police has also been approached for comment.
