A person has died following a single vehicle crash in Hurunui this morning.

Emergency services were called to Karaka Road, State Highway 7, near Waikari about 6.40am.

Police said despite best efforts by emergency crews, one person died at the scene.

One other person suffered serious injuries, while two people were moderately injured. All injured occupants were transported for medical treatment.

The road was closed while emergency services worked at the scene and later reopened.

Police said enquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
