A man has been assaulted before having his vehicle stolen in an early morning attack in central Christchurch.

A police spokesman said officers responded to reports of an assault on Hereford Street around 5:30 am.

When Police responded they discovered the offender had stolen his keys.

His car was subsequently stolen.

The man suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital.

Enquiries are ongoing.
