Ram-raiders smashed their way into Westfield Riccarton early this morning, driving through the mall before allegedly stealing clothing and shoes.

Police said several offenders crashed a vehicle through the glass doors on Rotherham Street.

Senior Sergeant Kerry Joyce said police were called to the premises just after 5am after reports a vehicle was used to gain entry.

“Initial enquiries have determined a number of items were taken and the alleged offenders fled the scene in the same vehicle,” Joyce said.

“At this time, police are continuing work to locate the vehicle and those involved.”

An onlooker said the vehicle was able to get through after cleaning staff had lowered a bollard.

Another told chrislynchmedia.com that the offenders “got to the food court area in the car before being interrupted”.

Enquiries are ongoing.
