A Christchurch theatre has been crowned New Zealand’s Venue of the Year for hosting a sports event on their stage.
The Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR) on Gloucester Street won the gong at the New Zealand Events’ Association annual awards for the NZ Squash Open 2025.
The team of 18 judges awarded the ITR for “bravery in transforming an historic stage into a glass squash court, exceptional customer service, commitment to innovation seemingly merging sports, culture and entertainment. Setting new benchmark standards both nationally and internationally.”
ITR’s Head of Marketing & Development Bianca Lindstrom said, “It’s an enormous honour. The award acknowledges not only our technical and operations team, who made the impossible possible, but also the creativity and adaptability of the theatre as a venue.”
“Winning this award proves that the Isaac Theatre Royal is more than just a performance space – it’s a cultural hub where different worlds can collide. We’re proud to be recognised as a venue that can host everything from ballet to rock concerts to international sporting events, all under one iconic roof,” Lindstrom said.

The other finalists in the venue of the year category were Christchurch Adventure Park for Crankworx Summer Series NZ, Tākina Events for the HX2024 Harcourts Annual Conference and Awards, and Taupo International Motorsport Park for 2024 ITM Taupō Super400.
Lindstrom said, “The NZ Squash Open is one of the most prestigious squash tournaments in the country, attracting world-class players and fans from around the globe.”
“Hosting it at the Isaac Theatre Royal was truly unique. We transformed our stage into a purpose-built glass squash court. It meant that instead of a traditional sports stadium, spectators experienced the thrill of the game in one of the most beautiful heritage theatres in New Zealand. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for both players and audiences – bringing sport and theatre together in a spectacular way. It was challenging but so rewarding,” she said.

This is the first time the theatre has won the award for hosting a sporting event.
“While we’ve received recognition for our arts and cultural programming, to be honoured for hosting a sporting event shows the versatility and innovation of our venue,” Lindstrom said.
“We share this award with Squash NZ, the players, and everyone who trusted us to make it happen. Most importantly, it’s a tribute to our incredible staff, from the technical crew who helped to build the court to our ushers and hospitality teams who welcomed new audiences through our doors.”
“Winning Venue of the Year shows the magic that happens when passion, creativity, and community come together – and we can’t wait to see what challenges we take on next,” Lindstrom said.
