Five youths have been arrested following a string of alleged offending across Christchurch, including car thefts, dangerous driving and an assault on a shopkeeper.

Christchurch Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said police were alerted earlier today to multiple vehicle thefts and reports of dangerous driving around the city.

At about 11.50am, police were called to a store near the intersection of Gayhurst Road and McBratneys Road after a shopkeeper was assaulted.

Chris Lynch Media has been told the shopkeeper was punched in the face.

St John said an ambulance was not required.

Police believe the same group of youths was involved in the earlier offending. The group fled in a vehicle after another customer entered the store.

Todd said no one was seriously injured. A helicopter was deployed as police worked to track the group. At about 3pm, officers located and arrested five youths in connection with the incidents.

Charges are pending.

Todd said enquiries remained ongoing to identify anyone else who may have been involved.
