The Dunedin City Council is urging residents to stay safe as heavy rain continues to affect the city and surrounding areas.
Mosgiel Pool and Mosgiel Library are closed today.
People are being asked to stay home where possible and avoid any unnecessary travel. A number of roads in Mosgiel were closed overnight because of surface flooding.
Dunedin City Emergency Management Operations Centre Controller Sandy Graham said the stormwater network was continuing to operate within capacity.
Flood protection barriers have been installed in Surrey Street, South Dunedin, and pumps and pipes in South Dunedin have managed the rainfall so far.
Three Mile Hill is closed because of surface flooding. There are also small slips on Otago Peninsula, and motorists are being urged to take care.
An evacuation centre was opened at the Taieri Bowling Club in Mosgiel overnight. At last report, a number of residents were using the facility, including a family of five. Staff are delivering breakfast supplies.
There was an issue with Mosgiel’s wastewater system last night, but this has now been fixed. Toilets and showers can be used, but residents are asked to call the DCC if they have any issues.
Sandbags are available for anyone who needs them. There are two sandbag stations, at the Mosgiel Memorial Park gym carpark, with entry through Church Street to avoid the worst of the surface flooding, and at the Dunedin Ice Stadium carpark.
Emergency services and DCC crews are on the ground in Mosgiel. Anyone facing an immediate risk to life or property should call 111.
Residents are also being asked to check on their neighbours and share this information.
The DCC said it would continue to provide regular updates through its website and Facebook page.
