Christchurch residents are being invited to brave the icy ocean at New Brighton Beach as the Midwinter Polar Plunge returns for 2026.

The event will be held on Sunday 21 June at the New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club, marking the shortest day of the year.

Organised by the New Zealand Antarctic Society, with support from the International Antarctic Centre, New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club and ChristchurchNZ, the plunge celebrates Christchurch’s long connection with Antarctica.

The event is inspired by a long running Antarctic midwinter tradition, where those spending winter on the ice would mark the occasion by jumping into freezing water.

Organisers said the Christchurch event was a way for people to connect with Antarctica through the ocean, and to learn more about the significance of midwinter on the Antarctic calendar.

Christchurch has long been regarded as a gateway to Antarctica, with the city playing a major role in supporting Antarctic science, logistics and travel.

Participants are encouraged to wear swimmers, bring warm clothes and a towel, and consider bringing tea or coffee in a thermos.

Costumes are also encouraged.

The Midwinter Polar Plunge will take place at New Brighton Beach on Sunday 21 June 2026.| 7:30 am – 8:30 am
