Multiple fast-moving vegetation fires north of Kaikōura have led to major disruptions to rail services and forced evacuations in the region this afternoon.

Fire and Emergency is responding to several vegetation fires in and around Kaikoura that have damaged or threatened structures.

They have also received multiple calls to damage caused by strong winds. Firefighters are prioritising incidents where life is at risk.

Head of Kiwirail Fleet Operations John Mills, told Chris Lynch Media emergency services have requested that all train movements be halted between Clarence and Kaikōura while crews respond to the unfolding situation.

The decision comes amid concerns over high winds and the closure of State Highway 1.

“As a precaution, we have closed the track and will be holding the Coastal Pacific service until we receive clearance to proceed,” Mills said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) responded to the initial blaze at approximately 1:36 p.m. after receiving reports of a hedge on fire on Bay Paddock Road in Hapuku.

Strong winds quickly fanned the flames, causing the fire to spread rapidly and ignite several spot fires in surrounding areas.

A second fire has since broken out at Postmans Road and Red Swamp Road in Kaikōura Flat, further complicating response efforts.

Firefighters from Marlborough and Canterbury are working to contain the fires.

Anyone who feels unsafe in their home due to the proximity of fires should self-evacuate.

The fires have threatened nearby homes, with FENZ confirming that evacuations are underway in affected areas.

Firefighters remain on the ground battling the blaze, working to contain its spread and protect properties.
