The Department of Conservation is appealing for information after vehicles caused extensive damage to one of Arthur’s Pass National Park’s most recognisable camping areas.

Klondyke Corner Campsite, a popular destination used by thousands of visitors each year and a familiar base for Coast to Coast competitors and support crews, has been badly damaged by four wheel drive vehicles.

DOC believes the damage occurred shortly before 4pm on 1 August.

Aerial photographs show vehicles have driven extensively across the campsite, leaving deep tyre tracks and large ruts across the landscape.

DOC Operations Manager Leeann Ellis said the damage was incredibly disappointing.

“The vehicles have left deep tyre tracks over a large area, compacting the soil, creating wide ruts and making the site much more susceptible to erosion in heavy rain,” Ellis said.

“They have also destroyed plants and opened the area up for weeds to grow and take over. It’s ruined what was a fantastic place and created the potential for a muddy mess in heavy rain.”

DOC staff are working with police to identify the vehicles involved and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Damaging natural or historic features within a national park is illegal, as is driving vehicles away from formed roads.

Offenders can face infringement fines or prosecution.

Ellis said DOC understood the growing popularity of four wheel driving but there were designated locations where people could enjoy the activity without damaging protected areas.

“We appreciate four wheel driving is an increasingly popular recreational activity. There are some fantastic tracks where drivers can challenge their skills and access some beautiful locations like the Edwards Valley and Maling Pass 4WD tracks in the St James Conservation Area.”

“Our plea is don’t go off road and cause damage to areas which are protected for a reason.”

Anyone who was involved or has information about the 1 August incident can contact DOC on 0800 362 468 or email [email protected] and reference CLE 12313.
