Road users are being urged to take extra care as strong winds continue to batter parts of the South Island today.
The Transport Agency said high winds are affecting multiple highways, with warnings now in place for:
-
State Highway 73 from Yaldhurst to Arthur’s Pass Village
-
State Highway 7 from the Hanmer Springs turnoff to Springs Junction, including Lewis Pass
-
State Highway 8 between Geraldine and Omarama
Earlier today, a general warning was issued to motorists in Central Otago.
The strong northerly and northwest winds have already brought down trees in some areas. On State Highway 1 at Chertsey, south of Christchurch, the road has been reduced to one lane with stop–go traffic management in place. Drivers are asked to stop on request and proceed with caution.
MetService has strong wind watches in force for much of the South Island, including conditions in the Canterbury High Country and Marlborough where winds may approach severe gale in exposed areas.
The weather is also causing issues further south. State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford Sound will close tonight at 5pm from Hollyford Junction to Donne River Bridge due to forecast snow. The highway is expected to reopen before 9am on Friday, but drivers are warned to watch for snow clearing operations. Another closure is likely on Friday night with further snow expected.
MetService has also warned of potentially heavy rain in the headwaters of Canterbury lakes and rivers south of Arthur’s Pass, and in the headwaters of Otago lakes and rivers.
Motorists, particularly those driving light or high-sided vehicles and motorcycles, are being urged to take extra care.
