11AM: Several state highways across the South Island were shut overnight as a polar blast swept through, dumping heavy snow across Canterbury and Otago. While conditions remain treacherous in some areas, multiple roads have now reopened.

This morning, State Highway 80 between Lake Pukaki and Aoraki Mount Cook was cleared and reopened, along with State Highway 79 from Fairlie to Gudex Road, and State Highway 85 between Alexandra and Kyeburn.

However, the following roads remain closed due to ongoing snow and ice:

Road crews have been working through the night and into the morning to restore access.

On State Highway 8, stranded vehicles are currently being cleared to allow the road to reopen.

In some areas, snow is still falling, slowing progress. Up to a metre of snow was reported in parts of the high country, adding to the challenge for emergency and maintenance teams responding to the event.
Motorists are urged to delay travel if possible and check for updates before heading out.
