Investigators conducting scene examination at fatal fire

Investigators from Fire and Emergency and police remain at the scene of a fatal fire in Burnham.

A person died when the unit they were in caught fire just before 2AM on Toanui Street.

Two other people were transported to the hospital in moderate condition, while one person was in serious condition.

On Wednesday afternoon a police spokesperson said the investigation was ongoing and staff would return to the scene tomorrow.

“The body of the deceased has been removed from the property and will undergo a formal identification process which is expected to take some time” the spokesperson said.

“Police have referred the death to the Coroner who we are continuing enquiries on behalf of.

“Police extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased who we are providing support to and will continue to keep updated on the investigation” the spokesperson said.
