Two boats have come off their moorings in Lyttelton Harbour following the bad weather.

Environment Canterbury said an 11 metre vessel, Wayward was grounded in Corsair Bay, while a 9.7 metre vessel, Manu Moana II, was grounded in Cass Bay.

Small amounts of fuel remain on board both vessels, with efforts under consideration to safely contain or recover any potential spill.

A spokesperson said the agency’s immediate focus was environmental monitoring and impact management.

“Our role is to monitor, observe, and minimise impacts to the environment,” the spokesperson said.

Physical response planning is now under way, with recovery efforts expected to progress once weather conditions improve.

The spokesperson said the agency was working closely with the vessel owners to ensure both boats are removed safely.

Members of the public are being asked to report any debris along the shoreline.

“If you see debris along the shoreline and can safely do so, please move it above the high tide line and contact us on 0800 765 588 with its location,” the spokesperson said.
