“Tragic this would happen on our premises” Christchurch Missioner speaks on fatal stabbing

The Christchurch City Missioner has spoken out following last night’s fatal stabbing on Hereford Street.

As first reported by Chris Lynch Media, a 22 year old man was stabbed to death at the emergency accommodation complex on Sunday night.

A 67-year-old man has been charged with murder.

Police were called to the property just after 10pm. The 22-year-old victim died a short time later.

Christchurch City Missioner Corinne Haines said “as a result of the stabbing last night our men’s emergency night shelter and continuing police investigations, our campus area at 276 Hereford Street has been closed.

“The men with us last night were transferred to another part of our premises.

“Our foodbank is over the road at 275 Hereford street and it will only be open for clients who have pre booked a food parcel with our self serve foodbank or pre packed parcel service.

“Today we will close our mens day programme, learning and development hub, reception and admin areas and there will be no onsite alcohol and other drug counselling and social worker work.

“It is tragic that this event would happen on our premises. We offer our thoughts and prayers to the families of those affected and deeply appreciate the efforts of our amazing staff along with emergency services last night.

“We will offer full support to all our staff and clients who have been affected. We will keep you updated as we have more discussions with the police” Haines said.

The 67-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Christchurch District Court this morning.
