Local Christchurch leaders have offered support to the family of an infant who died following a dog attack.

As first reported by Chris Lynch Media, emergency services were called to a Basingstoke Street address at 4.45pm on Friday.

The infant suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Christchurch Deputy Mayor Victoria Henstock told chrislynchmedia.com her thoughts were with the family during the tragic time.

“I understand the family has requested privacy, and the death is being investigated by police,” Henstock said.

Christchurch East MP Reuben Davidson described the death as an “absolute tragedy”.

“This is a real tragedy, and my thoughts are with the family at this time,” Davidson said.

A police spokesperson said the dog was known to the occupants, lived at the property and had been removed from the house.

Police were continuing to speak with those living at the property on Saturday and were providing them with support.
