A “significant health and safety breach” has prompted an urgent lunch recall at a Christchurch school

Haeata Community Campus has recalled its school lunches after discovering some of the food supplied to students was contaminated.

In a message to families, Principal Peggy Burrows said there had been “a significant health and safety breach” involving the lunches and acknowledged that some students may have eaten the affected food before it was pulled.

“We have recalled all lunches but are aware that some students may have eaten some of the food,” she said.

She urged parents to check their children for symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and fever, and to seek medical help if symptoms became severe.

“I am so sorry this has happened and will be complaining to the provider immediately,” she said.

Christchurch East MP Reuben Davidson said “I think this is totally unacceptable! Healthy School Lunches have been compromised ever since David Seymour started cutting corners and getting involved.

“Our local schools and suppliers had this working well across Christchurch East, today they are literally making children sick.”

The school has asked families to contact staff if they need support.

The Ministry of Education and the school has been approached for comment.
