Selwyn district’s economy grew at nearly four times the national rate in the year to March 2026, with new data showing strong gains across housing, employment, consumer spending and tourism.

The latest Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor shows Selwyn’s GDP expanded 1.5%, well ahead of national growth of 0.4%, with real estate, agriculture, professional services, wholesale and retail among the key drivers.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said “even with everything going on nationally, Selwyn’s still holding its own. You can see it in the everyday things: people moving here, busy shops, and new businesses opening. It tells us people back this district and feel confident about being here.”

Employment of Selwyn residents rose 4.2%, sharply outperforming a national decline of 0.8%. The report notes the increase implies more residents are commuting out of the district for work.

Consumer spending surged 6.1% against a national decline of 0.3%, reflecting both population growth and strong household confidence.

Residential construction reached record levels, with new dwelling consents up 47.8%, more than four times the national rate. The March 2026 quarter produced a record 636 new residential consents, surpassing the previous peak set in 2021. Standalone houses made up 81% of consents, with more standalone dwellings approved in Selwyn than in Christchurch City.

House sales rose 18.6% and new listings increased 9.4%.

Tourism expenditure climbed 18.7%, driven by a 43% increase in international visitor spending, while the number of business units grew 4.9%, double the national rate.

Selwyn’s unemployment rate sits at 2.9%, among the lowest in the country and well below the national figure of 5.3%. The district also recorded the lowest NEET rate in the region at 5.8%, the lowest crime rate in Canterbury and the highest school attendance rate at 63.8%.

Gliddon said the figures pointed to more than economic performance.

“We’re seeing strong economic growth, but it’s not just about the numbers. It’s families choosing Selwyn, homes being built, and more locals out spending and supporting businesses. That’s what a healthy, thriving district looks like.”
