Selwyn District Council has responded to concerns over the ride quality at a newly completed $5.6 million intersection in Rolleston.

The issue affects the two entrances to the supermarket development at the intersection of Levi Road and Masefield Drive, a key arterial point near the future Pak’nSave and Mitre 10 Mega.

A 30 km/h temporary speed limit has been introduced as a precaution.

Tim Mason, Executive Director Infrastructure and Property at Selwyn District Council, told chrislynchmedia.com, the issue was first identified during the “Levi Road Super Weekend” between April 4 and 6, when the final roading, traffic lights and infrastructure work were completed.

“The ride quality at the two entrances to the supermarket development along Levi Road that motorists are experiencing is a temporary issue,” Mason said.

“There are no safety concerns, and the intersection was built to design. There are no structural issues.”

Council is working with its contractor and design consultants to finalise a remediation plan, while also determining who is responsible for the cost.

Final road marking was scheduled to be completed by the end of April, but recent wet weather has delayed the work.

Mason said the surface issue was not caused by the rain and confirmed drainage is functioning as intended.

“This issue was not caused by last week’s heavy rain, but unfortunately this rain event has delayed our remediation work,” he said.

He confirmed the intersection was opened to traffic after engineers deemed it safe, despite the bumpy surface.

“The minor ride quality of the road did not impact safety or structure, therefore the decision was made to open the road.”

Mason said the issue will not delay access to the Pak’nSave or Mitre 10 Mega developments.

The $5.6 million intersection upgrade was funded through a combination of development contributions and debt, as outlined in Selwyn District Council’s Long-Term Plan 2021–31.

“We expect to have this completed by the end of May, 2025. “
