A dedicated Retail Crime Team launched in Christchurch has led to the arrest of 14 recidivist offenders and the laying of 93 charges.
The team was established on 14 July to combat persistent retail crime in the city.
Canterbury Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said the results reflected the hard work of frontline staff and strong collaboration with business owners, retailers, and the public.
“We have seen first-hand how the new teams are already making a difference in how people feel around the city, and it is great to see,” he said.
In one case, a 31-year-old woman was arrested and charged with around 24 dishonesty offences, including theft, shoplifting, and trespassing. She is remanded in custody and is due to reappear in Christchurch District Court on 13 August.
In a separate incident, a shop employee reported a shoplifting offence, allowing police to identify, locate, and summons a 31-year-old man to court. He faces four counts of shoplifting and is scheduled to appear in Christchurch District Court on 19 August. Further charges are being considered.
Superintendent Todd said the cases showed the value of strong connections between police, businesses and the public.
“It also emphasises that when teams like the Retail Crime Team and Community Beat Team work together, we can achieve long-term change and solutions which address the underlying causes for this type of offending,” he said.
Police urged the public to report unlawful or suspicious activity, stressing the importance of timely information to ensure safety.
