Christchurch residents are being reminded to secure their bins and stay indoors as strong winds continue to cause problems across the city.
The Christchurch City Council said if today is your bin collection day, you should bring your bin in as soon as it has been emptied to prevent it from being blown over or becoming a hazard.
Residents are also being encouraged to help their neighbours. “If you spot a neighbour’s bin and no one seems to be home, do the right thing and bring it in for them,” a council spokesperson said.
Council staff and contractors are on the ground in affected areas responding to reports of damage and disruption.
Anyone who discovers a damaged or missing bin can report it online at ccc.govt.nz/services/rubbish-and-recycling.
A Red Wind Warning remains in place for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, with damaging gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour expected between 10am and 4pm.
Residents are being urged to stay safe and aware of their surroundings, and to avoid being near trees both at home and in public spaces.
The council said people should think carefully about potential hazards before heading out to walk their dog or travel to work and, if possible, postpone outdoor activities until the winds ease.
