Police Ten 7 is being cancelled after 20 years on Kiwi screens.

The show ran for a total of 750 episodes across 29 seasons.

The reality police show underwent an independent review in 2021 amid racism claims from Auckland councillor Efeso Collins.

He said all the show was doing “is monetising people’s poor and vulnerable experiences”.

Following the review, the show’s name was changed to ‘Ten 7 Aotearoa’.

Former Police Ten 7 host Graham Bell spoke out in defence of the show after calls were made for it to be scrapped, arguing that critics should examine the causes of crime instead.

At the time, the popular host said New Zealand needed to focus on the social drivers of crime, instead of ignoring the over-representation of Māori and Pasifika in crime statistics.

Deputy Police Commissioner Jevon McSkimming says the show is an important part of New Zealand television history .

“As one of the most frequently viewed shows, it’s served as a vital investigative tool.

“Almost 1000 crimes, including serious assaults and homicides, have been
resolved thanks to information from Ten 7 viewers.”
