A brass plaque has been stolen from the CTV earthquake memorial in Latimer Square as police investigate the removal of several memorial plaques from central Christchurch.

Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Rupert Bool confirmed the CTV memorial plaque was among those taken.

“We are aware the brass plaque has been stolen from the CTV memorial in Latimer Square,” Bool said.

“We are looking to replace it as soon as possible with a different material to prevent this happening in future.”

Superintendent Lane Todd, Metro Commander, said police were appealing for information after several brass memorial plaques were removed from central Christchurch last week.

“The plaques were taken from the Latimer Square and the Bridge of Remembrance areas sometime overnight on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 August,” Todd said.

“Police are working to locate the plaques and establish what has happened to them.”

“As part of our enquiries, Police would like to identify and speak with the man pictured, who may be able to assist with the investigation,” Todd said.

“If this is you, or if you know who this person is, please get in touch.”

Police also want to hear from anyone who was in the Latimer Square or Bridge of Remembrance areas on those nights.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone who was in the Latimer Square or Bridge of Remembrance areas on these nights, or anyone who may have CCTV, dashcam footage, or information about the whereabouts of the plaques,” Todd said.
