State Highway 8 is closed between Lake Tekapo and Fairlie as emergency services work to free one person trapped in a single-vehicle crash.

A police spokesperson said they were called to the scene at 3.17pm on Fairlie-Tekapo Rd, near Lilybank Road and Edwards Stream Bridge.

“Initial indications are that there are serious injuries,” the spokesperson said.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays. Detours are also in place.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

A St John spokesperson said they are currently on scene with two first response units and an ambulance.

“This is an active scene so that’s all we can say for now,” they said.

Two Fire and Emergency appliances from Fairlie and Lake Tekapo are in attendance.

The NZ Transport Agency said the road is closed until further notice, and to avoid the area or delay your journey.
