A person has died after a boat capsized in South Bay, Kaikoura this afternoon.

Police were alerted to the incident at around 12.40pm and arrived to find one person deceased.

A police spokesperson said volunteers from Coastguard Kaikoura and members of the public assisted at the scene.

“Police can confirm a person has died following a water related incident in Kaikoura today,” the spokesperson said.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
