One person has died after a car left the road on Lewis Pass Road this afternoon.

A police spokesperson said emergency services were alerted to the crash at 1.05pm between Rogers Crescent and Hanmer Springs Road.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police said motorists travelling through the area could expect delays while the examination is carried out.
