Canterbury is being lashed by strong winds, heavy rain and rising river levels, prompting road closures and widespread travel warnings across the region.
The NZ Transport Agency is urging people to avoid travel today, particularly south of Christchurch and around the Waikirikiri/Selwyn River bridge on State Highway 1, where river levels continue to rise and are being closely monitored.
The Akaroa highway (SH75) is closed between Birdlings Flat and Little River due to flooding alongside Lake Forsyth.
Further north, minor flooding and slips have been reported in the Hundalee area near Kaikōura, though these are being cleared.
Southbound on SH1, motorists face delays due to potholes between Rakaia and Glenavy. NZTA said five crews are working today and tomorrow to carry out urgent repairs, and temporary speed restrictions are in place.
On SH77 through the Rakaia Gorge, minor flooding is affecting travel, and drivers are being asked to slow down.
Snow has fallen overnight around South Canterbury, including Burkes Pass, Lake Tekapo and the SH80 route to Aoraki/Mount Cook, with up to 150mm settling in some areas.
All highways in the region remain open, but drivers are urged to expect poor visibility and delay travel if possible.
Snow is also forecast later today for Arthur’s Pass (SH73), with 1 to 2cm expected near the summit.
NZTA is reminding motorists to drive to the conditions: reduce speed, avoid sudden braking or turning, increase following distances, and use headlights. Travellers should keep updated via the NZTA Journey Planner and MetService for the latest weather and road updates.
SH1 remains open near the Selwyn River, but NZTA warned a detour may be activated if water levels continue to rise. However, the detour route is also vulnerable to flooding.
