Lyttelton Tunnel is currently closed after a small fire involving a truck inside the tunnel.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Alex Norris said two fire crews, one from Lyttelton and one from Woolston, were at the scene.

He said the fire involved the truck’s exhaust.

“It looks like it was extinguished before fire arrived on scene, so we’re just checking to make sure it’s safe.”

Norris said firefighters were working with tunnel control to manage the situation.

He could not confirm the size of the truck or what it was carrying.

There was no indication yet how long the tunnel would remain closed.
