Kāinga Ora Canterbury has released a statement to chrislynchmedia.com following the fatal police shooting in Bryndwr overnight.

A woman died and a man is in critical condition after being shot by police on Clyde Road just after 11pm. Officers had been called to a report of a man armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself and his partner.

When police arrived, a woman ran from the house followed by a man holding a knife. Believing she was in immediate danger, officers shot the man, critically injuring him.

The woman then picked up the knife and threatened police. Despite repeated instructions to drop the weapon, she moved toward officers and was shot. She received immediate medical attention but died at the scene.

The man was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Kāinga Ora Canterbury Regional Director Liz Krause told chrislynchmedia.com, “We were sad to learn of the fatal shooting at one of our Christchurch properties overnight. Our thoughts are with all those impacted. We will be reaching out to our tenants living close by to see if they need any additional support over the coming days. As this matter is under Police investigation, please direct any questions you might have to them.”

Scene guards are in place and Clyde Road remains partially closed.

A critical incident investigation has been launched and the matter will be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as is standard for any police shooting.
