Former Christchurch City Councillor James Daniels has announced he is withdrawing from the race for the Coastal Ward in the upcoming local body elections.
In a message shared on Facebook, Daniels said the decision followed “much thought and many conversations” with his wife and family.
“I am no longer standing in the Council election. I wanted you to be the first to hear this,” he said.
Daniels said he had been excited at the prospect of once again representing the Coastal community but said his personal situation had changed.
“I cannot do that to my fullest ability,” he said. “I have not made this decision lightly and want to sincerely thank the many people who have supported and encouraged me so far; it has meant a great deal.”
Daniels announced his full support for Coastal Ward Community Board Member Jo Zervos to take his place in the race.
“Jo has the integrity, experience, and community heart to be a strong voice for us and I encourage all of you who’ve backed me to now get behind Jo Zervos. Coastal needs her kind of leadership.”
Daniels previously represented the Coastal Ward from 2019 to 2021 before stepping down early to return to his broadcasting career, which forced a by-election. Celeste Donovan won the seat in the subsequent vote.

Zervos responded to Daniels’ announcement, saying she was still processing the news.
“I’m still trying to wrap my head around this decision, but I want to say good on you for putting your hand up with the right intentions to support Phil Mauger for Mayor around the table,” she said.
“He needs that extra vote to support him and at the moment Coastal is the difference. This is the main reason I have put my hand up too.
“I was looking forward to the three-horse race this election, but this will change things up a bit. Thanks for your support, it’s much appreciated.”
Daniels also gave his full backing to current Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger.
“I unequivocally support the re-election of Phil Mauger for Mayor. He’s been part of the Coastal community since birth and has done a great job for our city and Banks Peninsula, but there’s more to do.”
