Independent Citizens have announced two candidates for the Harewood Ward in the upcoming 2025 local elections: current community board chair Jason Middlemiss and newcomer Lucy Keown.
Middlemiss is seeking re-election for a third term and currently serves as chair of the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board.
According to the announcement, he “brings a steady hand, deep local knowledge, and a proven track record of getting things done for the community.”
He said “Lucy and I look forward to the chance to represent our community for the upcoming term. There are a number of infrastructure projects we need that will require strong advocacy over the coming years ”
“Getting to know our community, it’s stakeholder groups and their needs over the last 2 terms has been a privilege and I ask for their support to continue for another term”
Keown is standing for public office for the first time.
The release describes her as someone who “adds fresh energy and a forward-looking perspective to the team.” It said she is “committed to being a strong voice for residents and helping shape a thriving, well-connected community.”
Lucy is the daughter of Harewood Councillor Aaron Keown.
The Independent Citizens team said the candidates will focus on “delivering the basics that matter most: well-maintained roads and footpaths, quality parks, and vibrant community spaces.”
Their goal is to ensure Harewood “continues to be one of the best places to live and raise a family in Christchurch.”
The 2025 local elections are scheduled for later this year, with nominations set to open in July.
