A Christchurch woman who turned personal tragedy into a life of service has been recognised with a special community award.

Lynette Whitt was honoured on Friday evening for her voluntary work with Victim Support and the Hornby Rugby Football Club.

The award acknowledged her commitment to helping others, despite facing immense challenges in her own life.

In 1995, Lynette’s eldest daughter Sonya was murdered.

In the aftermath, Lynette and her late husband Geoff were introduced to Victim Support.

Their experience inspired Lynette to become a volunteer with the organisation, eventually joining the Homicide Support Team.

She supported 21 families of homicide victims over nine years, working closely with detectives, assisting families during court trials, and helping them access practical and emotional support. She travelled to the Police Academy for training and dedicated herself to the role, despite not being able to drive. Geoff played a key role too, taking care of their grandchildren and transporting Lynette to her volunteer commitments.

Her voluntary efforts extended into the Hornby community, where she became a much-loved figure at the Hornby Rugby Club. She first joined in 2009, working in the kitchen and bar, before stepping into committee roles, organising housie fundraisers, and helping with catering for special events. She officially retired from the kitchen in 2023, but still lends a hand when needed.

Lynette’s contributions were both paid and voluntary over the years, but her dedication never wavered. Her sandwiches have become legendary at the club, and fittingly, she made them for her own award ceremony.

Those who know her say she is the heart of the Hornby community. Despite the loss of two daughters, two grandsons, and her beloved husband, Lynette continues to give back, travelling by bus or relying on friends and family to attend her commitments.

“She’s an exceptional person,” one friend said during the ceremony. “The world needs more Lynette Whitts.”

The community award was a recognition of her compassion, strength, and selfless service to others.
