Four people were taken into police custody overnight following a reported robbery in Sumner.

Senior Sergeant Kerry Joyce said that around 10.40pm Tuesday police were called to the Esplanade after the alleged offenders attempted to take the victim’s vehicle.

“The victim has allegedly been approached and threatened by the offenders with a weapon,” Joyce said.

“The offenders left the scene prior to police arrival, however were located a short time later and taken into custody.”

“Thankfully, the victim is uninjured however is understandably shaken by the incident,” Joyce said.

Two youth have been referred to Youth Aid.

A youth and a 22-year-old man are due to appear in Christchurch District Court on 28 May, charged with demands to steal and disguised for burglary.

Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
