A building in Christchurch’s central city that was under construction has been destroyed by fire.
A Fire and Communications spokesman said just before 8PM, they received multiple calls from the public to the commercial premises on Fitzgerald Avenue near Tuam and Litchfield Streets.
He said when the Christchurch City Station crew arrived, they upgraded the fire to a second alarm, which meant more crews were required.
Fire crews from Woolston and Ilam Station then rushed to the scene.
By the time the first crew arrived, the building was well involved.
The Fire and Communications spokesman said crews has the blaze under control at 8.10PM.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but a fire investigator was heading to the scene this morning.
