A Rangiora High School student has died in a single vehicle crash in Loburn.
Senior Sergeant Chris Wakelin said the crash happened on Loburn Whiterock Road, near the intersection with Barkers Road, on Saturday.
Rangiora High School Principal Bruce Kearney told chrislynchmedia.com, “Sadly, our community is reeling with the loss of one of our students.
“Ethan was in Year 11 and a fantastic young man with lots of energy and charm. He will be greatly missed.
“On Monday, our school will start with form time and our students will be informed of what has happened and where they can get support.
“Our whare will be the base and our counsellors will work out of this space, providing support where needed to students and staff.
“This will be the beginning of a long journey for all those involved, and our hearts especially go out to the family during this deeply sad time.”
A St John spokeswoman said three patients were transported to Christchurch Hospital.
One was flown by helicopter in a critical condition, while two others were taken by ambulance, one in a serious condition and one in a moderate condition.
Another person was assessed and treated at the scene.
It is understood the car was carrying a group of teenagers when it struck a tree.
The Serious Crash Unit was sent to the scene.
A local resident told chrislynchmedia.com flowers had been placed at the site where the crash happened.
The family of the boy who died lived close to the crash site.
“It will be very hard for them, given they’ll drive past that site all the time,” the resident said.
“Devastating moment for our community”
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident in Loburn that has impacted families from Rangiora High School.
“My thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the families. No words can ease the pain of such a loss, and our community mourns alongside you.
“This is a devastating moment for our community, especially the school community.
“Rangiora is a close community, and when something like this happens, the hurt is felt far and wide, especially across the school, by students, staff, families, and friends. Please know that you are not alone. We stand together in grief and support of one another.
“I also want to acknowledge the emergency services and first responders who attended the scene and are supporting those affected.”
A Ministry of Education spokeswoman said she would follow up on a request for comment on Monday.
