New businesses opening across Waimakariri are being hailed as another sign of the district’s continued population and economic growth.

Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey said recent developments in Woodend and Ravenswood reflected increasing confidence in North Canterbury as a place to live, work and establish a business.

Doocey recently visited the new Unichem Pharmacy and neighbouring Medical Corner GP practice in Woodend, as well as the new Smooch dental spa at Ravenswood.

He said the investment showed Waimakariri was continuing to establish itself as one of the country’s fastest growing areas.

“We often hear that Waimakariri is one of the most sought-after places to live, and this is evidenced by the number of people moving down here from places like Auckland and Hamilton,” Doocey said.

“But it’s also still proving popular with people wanting to move out of Christchurch and enjoy the lifestyle we offer north of the river.”

The district’s expanding population has driven significant residential and commercial development, particularly around Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and Rangiora.

Doocey said economic indicators for the year to the end of March 2026 showed Waimakariri had recorded growth in gross domestic product, business numbers, tourism spending and commercial vehicle registrations compared with the previous year.

Unemployment had also fallen.

“This all reaffirms that Waimakariri is an excellent place to live, work and play, and things are looking up,” he said.

“With all the negative news in the media, it’s important to remember to celebrate the positive.

“Businesses are expanding and people are flocking to the district to set up home, which is great news for the local economy and the community as a whole.”
