Motorists travelling through North Canterbury next week are being warned to allow extra time, with safety and maintenance work expected to affect traffic on several state highways.
From Monday 15 June, traffic will be stopped at times in both directions on State Highway 1/Parnassus Road at Hawkswood, also known as “Siberia”, while vegetation clearing and rock scaling work is carried out.
Road users should prepare for delays of up to 30 minutes at the site.
Traffic management will be in place daily from 7am to 6pm and is expected to continue through to Friday 26 June.
Short delays are also possible on SH1 north of Kaikōura next week, where ongoing road surface repairs are being carried out.
Drivers using the inland route on State Highway 7 should also expect some delays, though on a smaller scale, due to road surface repairs between Waipara and Springs Junction.
Stop/go traffic management will be in place on demand, with delays of up to 10 minutes expected between 8am and 5pm each day. That work is scheduled to continue through to Friday 19 June, 2026.
The New Zealand Transport Authority thanked road users for their patience while the work is completed.
