Te Kura o Huriawa Thorrington is set to unveil a new mural facing Colombo Street, giving the community a bold visual insight into the school’s identity.

Designed to be highly visible to passing traffic and pedestrians, the mural will act as a public statement of the school’s values and character.

The large-scale artwork is the culmination of a whole-school inquiry project exploring who the school is, where it has come from and where it is heading.

Local Christchurch artist Wongi Wilson has been commissioned to create the piece. Having grown up in nearby suburbs, Wilson brings strong local knowledge and an understanding of the area’s history and changing landscape.

Students will play a key role in shaping the design. Working with their art teacher, they have been developing ideas based on the school’s history, environment and future aspirations. Their concepts will be exhibited in the school hall before Wilson finalises the mural design in collaboration with student leaders.

School leaders say the mural will become a lasting feature of the Colombo Street frontage,  a vibrant and meaningful landmark that reflects the pride, values and community spirit of the school for years to come.
