A Christchurch cyclist has been selected to represent New Zealand at the UCI Under 19 World Championships in Montreal, Canada.

Andre Free will compete in both the 134 kilometre road race, which includes 2,650 metres of climbing, and the 20 kilometre individual time trial from September 22.

He will line up against some of the best young riders in the world and is aiming for top 10 finishes in both events.

Before heading to Canada, Free will travel to Belgium, where he has secured a guest rider spot with Belgian team Isorex.

He is expected to race up to twice a week, with his first planned event a four stage tour in the Netherlands.

The experience will allow him to test himself against some of Europe’s top young riders as he continues his preparation for the world championships.

Free will stay with two host families in the small city of Aalter while in Belgium and said he was looking forward to experiencing different countries and cultures.

His selection follows a strong performance at the Oceania Under 19 races in Australia earlier this year, where he finished second in the time trial and fifth in the 112 kilometre road race.

The road race was held in temperatures above 30 degrees, with 33 riders starting and only eight finishing.

Free is a Year 13 student at Christchurch Boys’ High School, where he is a senior monitor.

He will continue his studies remotely while overseas and is thankful for the school’s support in helping him keep up his academic work while pursuing cycling.

Free said cycling continued to challenge and motivate him.

“I love cycling because it challenges me every day and rewards the hard work that goes into training and racing.

“I enjoy pushing my limits, competing against strong riders, and constantly working to improve.

“My goal is to continue progressing through the ranks and represent New Zealand at the highest level possible.

“Being selected to race internationally has been a huge step in my journey, and I hope to build on these opportunities in the years ahead.

“One day, I would love to compete professionally in Europe and race in events such as the Tour de France.

“For now, my focus is on continuing to develop as a rider, gaining experience, and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way.”

Free leaves New Zealand on June 22 for the three month campaign.

He is working on sponsorship opportunities to help fund the trip.

A Givealittle page has been set up for those who want to support him.
