Emergency services have been called to Christchurch-Akaroa Road at Little River following a single vehicle crash.
A police spokesperson said they were called shortly before 4.40pm after a car went off the road, hit a bank and ended up in the water.
The vehicle began sinking, but the single occupant managed to get out.
Fire and Emergency crews are also at the scene.
A police spokesperson said an ambulance was called as a precaution to check the person over.
One lane of the road is currently blocked while emergency crews work at the scene.
